Approach
I follow a behavioral science approach based on systematic experimentation and observation.
Empathy / Understanding
Behavioral Diagnosis
Intervention Design
Testing / Learning
1
EMPATHY / UNDERSTANDING
Define a target behavior
Conduct in-depth interviews with key stakeholders
Perform research and an evidence-based literature review to begin to understand the problem as well as gain the perspective of the user / customer / patient / student, etc.
Perform a logic model of problem
2
BEHAVIORAL DIAGNOSIS
Write down the behavioral steps (touchpoints) needed to perform the desired behavior and/or a behavioral journey map
Use frameworks to identify barriers (including biases and heuristics) to positive behaviors and the challenges that make decision-making difficult
Identify opportunities to increase motivation to reach the target behavior
Conduct additional research (quantitative surveys, ethnographic observation, one-on-one interviews, focus groups, etc.)
Use prioritization exercises to determine the most important barrier to remove or opportunity to pursue
3
INTERVENTION DESIGN
Brainstorm potential interventions to change the behavior of interest, including the use of participatory design
Design or modify products and/or services by leveraging behavioral science or improving behaviors
4
TESTING / LEARNING
Implement the interventions in ways that allow for rigorously evaluating impact, ideally including a control experiment to test their effectiveness
Test outcomes and share results
Gather feedback and iterate when and if possible
