Behavior Change Design

I follow a behavioral science approach based on empathy, research, and  experimentation

1
Empathy / Understanding

2
Behavioral Diagnosis

3
Intervention Design

4
Testing / Learning

1

EMPATHY / UNDERSTANDING

Define a target behavior

Conduct interviews with key stakeholders, perform qualitative and/or quantitative research, carry out scientific literature reviews to begin to understand the problem as well as gain the perspective of the user / customer / patient / student, etc.

Help create a logic outcomes map to focus on the desired outcomes, identify what to measure, and map progress

2

BEHAVIORAL DIAGNOSIS

Identify the behavioral steps (touchpoints) needed to perform the desired behavior and create a behavioral journey map

Use behavioral science frameworks such as COM-B and the Behaviour Change Wheel to identify barriers and facilitators to behavior change

Identify opportunities to increase motivation to reach the target behavior

Conduct additional research (quantitative surveys, ethnographic observation, one-on-one interviews, focus groups, etc.) when possible

Use prioritization exercises to determine the most important barrier to remove or opportunity to pursue

3

INTERVENTION DESIGN

Brainstorm potential interventions to improve the experience or change the behavior of interest, including the use of participatory design

Design or modify products, services and/or experiences by leveraging behavioral science

4

TESTING / LEARNING

Implement the interventions in ways that allow for evaluating impact, ideally including a control experiment to test effectiveness

Test outcomes and share results

Gather feedback and iterate when possible!
